Why does anal itching occur?
Short answer
Anal itching is a constant or occasional itching sensation around the anus. It is not a separate disease but a sign of many conditions: hemorrhoids, anal fissure, anal polyp, fistula, warts (condylomas), skin diseases (dermatitis, psoriasis), fungal infection, worm infestation (especially in children), hygiene mistakes and irritating foods. A proctological examination is needed to find the cause.
Most common causes
- Hemorrhoids, anal fissure, anal polyp — moisture and mucus irritate the skin
- Warts (condylomas) and papillomas
- Contact dermatitis: scented soaps, wet wipes, dyes in toilet paper, some intimate gels and cosmetic products
- Excessive washing or, conversely, insufficient hygiene
- Sweating, synthetic underwear
- Fungal infection, especially in people with diabetes and after antibiotics
- Worm infestation
- Coffee, hot and spicy foods, alcohol
- Rarely, precancerous changes of the anal area — prolonged itching requires examination
What can you do at home?
- After a bowel movement, wash the area with lukewarm water and dry it with a soft towel (without rubbing)
- Avoid scented soap, wet wipes and alcohol-based solutions
- Wear cotton underwear
- Try not to scratch: scratching damages the skin and increases the itching
- Cut down on coffee and hot, spicy foods
When should you see a proctologist?
- If the itching lasts more than 1–2 weeks
- If it is accompanied by bleeding, discharge, a protrusion or pain
- If there are sores, cracks or color changes on the skin
In patients who come with anal itching, Dr. Hasanova first identifies proctological causes (hemorrhoids, fissure, polyp, fistula, warts) by examination. If a skin disease is suspected, she refers the patient to a dermatologist.
