Posterior colporrhaphy and levatorplasty (rectocele surgery)

• Rectocele that causes difficulty with bowel movements, a feeling of incomplete emptying or the need to help with a finger
• Cases that do not respond to conservative treatment (diet, pelvic floor exercises)
• Rectocele that impairs quality of life with a bulge and a feeling of heaviness in the vagina

The operation is usually performed under spinal anesthesia. Through an incision made in the back wall of the vagina, the tissue supporting the front wall of the rectum is stitched and reinforced, the levator muscles are brought closer together, and excess mucous membrane is removed. When needed, hemorrhoids, an anal polyp or an anal fissure are also treated in the same session. If there is a gynecological problem such as uterine prolapse, the operation can be planned jointly with a gynecological surgeon.

• The patient usually stays in the hospital for a short time.
• Recovery takes several weeks; the rehabilitation period usually lasts about 1 month.
• In the first weeks, it is important not to lift heavy objects, not to strain, and to soften the stool.
• The doctor determines at the follow-up visit when you can return to housework and sexual activity.
