Can hemorrhoids be treated without surgery?
Short answer
Yes. In early-stage internal hemorrhoids (grade I–II, sometimes grade III), non-surgical treatment is often possible. Along with medication and dietary adjustment, procedures such as sclerotherapy, rubber band ligation and infrared coagulation are used. These procedures are performed in the examination room without anesthesia and take a short time.
Sclerotherapy
A special medicated solution is injected into the base of the hemorrhoid. The solution causes the blood vessels to shrink and the hemorrhoid to get smaller. It is used mainly for bleeding internal hemorrhoids of grade I–II. The procedure can be repeated several times.
The doctor's practice
Dr. Hasanova uses sclerotherapy in the early stages of hemorrhoids.
Rubber band ligation
General information
A special rubber band is placed around the base of the internal hemorrhoid. The band cuts off the hemorrhoid's blood supply, and within a few days the hemorrhoid shrinks and falls off. It is used mainly for internal hemorrhoids of grade II–III. After the procedure, there may be mild discomfort for a few days and a small amount of bleeding when the hemorrhoid falls off.
Infrared coagulation
General information
Infrared light energy is applied to the hemorrhoid. The energy causes the vessels to clot and the hemorrhoid to shrink. It is used for internal hemorrhoids of grade I–II. Note: this method is not a laser but infrared light.
Who is it not suitable for?
These procedures are usually not chosen for external hemorrhoids, thrombosed hemorrhoids, grade IV hemorrhoids, or when an anal fissure or inflammation is also present. For people taking blood-thinning medication, the decision is made individually.
