How do I book an appointment?

What are the office hours?

The day and time of the visit are agreed in advance. The schedule may change on surgery days, so confirm the time by phone or on WhatsApp before you come.

Is a proctological examination painful?

In most cases the examination causes only mild discomfort. A special numbing gel and individual, sterile instruments are used. In painful conditions such as an acute anal fissure or an abscess, the doctor limits the extent of the examination. Colonoscopy, however, is usually performed under sedation.

How should I prepare for the examination?

No special preparation is usually needed for a proctological examination and video proctoscopy; sometimes a small cleansing enema is recommended. For colonoscopy, however, a diet and complete bowel cleansing are essential. Bring a list of the medications you take and the results of previous tests.

Are male patients seen as well?

Yes. Dr. Hasanova is a female surgeon-proctologist and pays special attention to women's proctology, but she also sees, examines and operates on male patients.

Is an online or video consultation possible?

A video consultation can help guide the patient and assess whether the problem is urgent, but it does not replace an in-person examination. A proctological examination is needed for an accurate diagnosis. Confirm the terms of a video consultation via WhatsApp.

Can a diagnosis be made and medication prescribed via WhatsApp?

No. Making a diagnosis based on one or two symptoms and prescribing medication without an examination is not right and can harm the patient. By message, you can ask general questions about diseases, examinations and treatment methods, and book an appointment. Treatment is prescribed after an examination.

Is health insurance accepted?

Yes. Patients covered by PASHA Sığorta, Atəşgah Sığorta, AXA MBASK, A-Group Sığorta, Xalq Sığorta, Qala Sığorta, Meqa Sığorta, İpək Yolu Sığorta, Azərsığorta and other companies are accepted. When you get in touch, confirm whether your policy covers this service.

Is confidentiality maintained?

Yes. The entire examination and treatment process is carried out in line with the principles of medical ethics and medical confidentiality. Information about the patient's identity, diagnosis and treatment is not disclosed to third parties, except in cases provided for by law.

In which languages do you see patients?

Dr. Hasanova communicates in Azerbaijani, Russian and English.

Hemorrhoids, anal fissure, fistula

Can hemorrhoids be treated without surgery?

It depends on the stage of the disease. In the early stage, non-surgical methods such as changes in diet, medication and sclerotherapy are often enough. Surgical treatment may be required for advanced, frequently bleeding or complicated hemorrhoids.

What is LigaSure?

LigaSure is an electrosurgical device that cuts tissue while sealing blood vessels. In hemorrhoid surgery, it allows the hemorrhoids to be removed with little blood loss. It is not a laser. Dr. Hasanova performs most hemorrhoid operations with this device.

Can an anal fissure heal on its own?

An acute anal fissure often heals within a few weeks with proper treatment and once constipation is resolved. A chronic fissure lasting longer than 6 weeks, however, usually does not go away on its own, and surgical treatment is required if medication does not help.

Can a painful swelling around the anus be treated at home?

No. A painful, steadily growing swelling around the anus together with fever may be a sign of a perianal abscess (paraproctitis). Squeezing or puncturing such a swelling is strictly forbidden. An abscess requires urgent surgical opening, and antibiotics alone do not cure it.

Will an anal fistula go away on its own?

No. An anal fistula is a channel that has formed between the anal canal and the skin, and it does not heal with medication. Although antibiotics may reduce the inflammation temporarily, the lasting treatment is surgical. The method is chosen according to the type of fistula and its relationship to the sphincter.

Will a pilonidal sinus go away with medication?

A pilonidal sinus that causes pain, discharge or an abscess does not heal permanently with medication and requires surgical treatment. For small openings that cause no symptoms at all, observation and hygiene alone are sometimes enough.

Why does anal itching occur?

Anal itching can be caused by hemorrhoids, anal fissure, a polyp, condylomas (warts), skin diseases, a fungal infection, worm infestation or hygiene mistakes. If the itching lasts more than 1–2 weeks or is accompanied by bleeding or discharge, a proctological examination is needed.

Diagnostics

When is a colonoscopy needed?

Colonoscopy is recommended for screening in people over 45 (from age 50 in some guidelines), and also when there is rectal bleeding, long-standing constipation or diarrhea, unexplained weight loss, anemia, or colon cancer in the family. When there is a family risk, the examination is started earlier.

Is colonoscopy dangerous?

When performed to modern standards by an experienced doctor, colonoscopy is a low-risk procedure. Complications, for example bleeding from the site where a polyp was removed or injury to the bowel wall, occur rarely. The patient is given detailed information before the examination.

Does video proctoscopy replace colonoscopy?

No. Video proctoscopy shows the anal canal and the last part of the rectum, and it is the main examination for diagnosing proctological diseases. Colonoscopy is needed to evaluate all parts of the colon, look for polyps and carry out cancer screening.

What should I do if I have bleeding from the anus?

Do not regard rectal bleeding as normal, and see a proctologist. The most common causes are hemorrhoids and anal fissure, but polyps, colitis and colon cancer can cause the same symptom. If there is heavy bleeding, dizziness or black stool, call emergency medical services (103).

For women

Are problems that arise after childbirth normal?

Hemorrhoids, anal fissure, constipation and pelvic floor weakness are common after pregnancy and childbirth. But if pain, bleeding, a feeling of incomplete emptying or difficulty holding gas or stool lasts longer than a few weeks, it is not normal and must definitely be evaluated.

Is treatment possible during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Yes. During this period, medications that are safe for the mother and child are chosen, and recommendations on diet and hygiene are given. For a thrombosed hemorrhoid, a minor surgical procedure is possible. Planned operations are usually postponed until after childbirth and the recovery period.

What is a rectocele?

A rectocele is a bulging of the front wall of the rectum toward the back wall of the vagina. It shows up as difficulty with bowel movements, a feeling of incomplete emptying and a feeling of fullness in the vagina. In mild cases conservative treatment is used, and when it causes symptoms, posterior colporrhaphy and levatorplasty surgery is performed.

Surgery and recovery

What type of anesthesia is used for operations?

Most proctological operations are performed under spinal anesthesia: the lower part of the body goes numb, and the patient stays awake. Light sedation can also be given if the patient wishes. In some cases, intravenous or general anesthesia is chosen. The decision is made together with the anesthesiologist.

How long do I need to stay in the hospital?

After hemorrhoid and other anal operations, the patient is often discharged home the same day or after staying one night. With combined and more extensive operations, the hospital stay can be longer. The doctor tells you the exact length of stay before the operation.

How long does recovery take after surgery?

The healing time depends on the type and extent of the operation and usually ranges from 1 to 4 weeks. Recovery is shorter after minimally invasive procedures. After rectocele surgery, recovery can take about a month. The doctor gives individual recommendations.

Are follow-up visits needed after surgery?

Yes. After surgery, Dr. Hasanova invites patients for follow-up visits several times during the first month. At these visits, wound healing is checked, nutrition and hygiene recommendations are updated, and treatment is changed when needed.
