What is LigaSure hemorrhoidectomy?
Short answer
LigaSure hemorrhoidectomy is the removal of hemorrhoids with a special electrosurgical device. By compressing the tissue and delivering controlled energy, the device seals the blood vessels and then cuts. This method reduces bleeding during the operation and limits the effect of heat on the surrounding tissue. It is used mainly for grade III–IV and complicated hemorrhoids.
Who is it recommended for?
- Grade III and IV internal and combined hemorrhoids
- Hemorrhoids that bleed often or are complicated by thrombosis
- Cases that do not respond to conservative treatment or non-surgical procedures
How is the operation performed?
The operation is usually performed under spinal anesthesia. The patient can stay awake or, depending on their wishes, receives light sedation. The hemorrhoids are sealed and removed with the LigaSure device. When needed, anal polyps, an anal fissure or a rectocele are also treated in the same session. A hemorrhoidectomy performed on its own usually takes 15–20 minutes; combined operations take longer.
Advantages and limitations
Studies have shown that, compared with the conventional operation, LigaSure hemorrhoidectomy has a shorter operating time and can cause less pain in the first days. However, like any operation, it has its risks:
- Pain and discomfort in the first days after the operation
- Bleeding, especially on days 7–10 when the scab falls off
- Temporary difficulty urinating
- Infection
- Rarely, anal narrowing
- Recurrence
LigaSure does not mean a “bloodless, stitchless operation.” The accurate statement is this: blood loss during the operation is low, and in many cases no stitches are needed.
After surgery
- 24 hoursThe first dressing change is usually done 24 hours after surgery.
- The first daysPain relievers, stool softeners, a warm sitz bath.
- Days 7–10Bleeding may occur when the scab falls off.
- First monthSeveral planned follow-up visits.
- 1–4 weeksThe recovery time depends on the extent of the operation.
The doctor's practice
Examinations and treatments Dr. Hasanova performs herself
- LigaSure hemorrhoidectomy is Dr. Hasanova's main surgical method. She has been performing this operation for many years, including for grade IV and complicated hemorrhoids.
- The device's disposable tips are used individually for each patient.
- She often combines the operation with posterior colporrhaphy, levatorplasty, anal polypectomy and removal of an anal fissure in the same session.
- Patients are often discharged the same day or after one night in the hospital.
- She conducts several follow-up visits during the first month after the operation.
Frequently asked questions
Is LigaSure a laser operation?
No. LigaSure is not a laser but an electrosurgical device that seals blood vessels. Laser methods are a different technology that is used separately in the treatment of hemorrhoids. The doctor chooses which method is suitable according to the grade of the hemorrhoids.
Is there pain after LigaSure surgery?
Because the operation is performed under anesthesia, no pain is felt during it. In the following days there is some pain and discomfort, which is managed with painkillers and stool-softening medications. The degree of pain is individual.
How long do I need to stay in the hospital?
Often the patient goes home the same day, or the next day after one night in the hospital. This depends on the extent of the operation, the type of anesthesia and the patient's condition.
Can hemorrhoids develop again after the operation?
Yes, recurrence is possible, especially if constipation and straining continue. A high-fiber diet, enough fluids, proper toilet habits and follow-up visits reduce the risk.
